Will Salinas: Final Thoughts

So this is not how I pictured the semester ending. I thought we’d have done another newscast and keep creating content for NSUTV, but things clearly went left real quick. It’s nice to look back though and see what we did.

This semester we had beats which in summary is a topic that we stick to. My beat was NSU player profiles where I pick an athlete from a particular sport and interview them. I was nervous about this beat, as I’d have to get permission to interview every person and work around their schedule having to meet deadlines. This was a good thing though as I needed real life practice meeting deadlines. My first video I had plenty of time to prepare so I was able ton get an interview with NSU basketball player Jamaure Gregg It went really well as luckily I had Travis Mitchell there to help out. If you’re reading this, thanks Travis.

Next, I really didn’t want to keep doing basketball so next I decided to football and scored an interview with NSU wide receiver Tanner Ash. It was a pretty decent video, though I could have definitely have recorded some more shots. I was starting to get the hang of the flow though with setting up interviews and making time to edit and everything else. Though a recurring problem starting from the first video would be the athlete holding the mic.

The third video was on national champion long jumper Jasmyn Steels. I’d say this is probably my favorite video, because Jasmyn was really nice about everything. Not to say the others weren’t but with her being a senior and used to interviews she made it feel like it was a hobby recording her. She was very helpful with getting videos together for me and working with me to make the video better even after we met.

After Jasmyn I decided to move back to basketball and interviews NSU’s starting center Larry Owens. Larry and I have had previous classes so the interview was really smooth. It was nice to catch up and record the video. Although with Larry being huge it was hard to get good sound as I didn’t want the mic to appear in the video. The one time I remember to not include the mic in the shot, I pick one of the tallest guys on campus. It still turned out to be a decent video.

Now the next video was definitely my least favorite. Not because of the athlete because Daunte Stuart was awesome and a good interview. The problem was that it was 9 pm and under 30 degrees. I was so ready to leave. The video didn’t turn out too bad despite the shaky camera videos in some parts of the video. Daunte would actually turn out to be my last student athlete to interview.

My last video with the actual camera would be interviewing Travis Mitchell, Madison Morrison and David Antilley. They helped make the video about the coronavirus affecting sports, and sure enough everything we talked about in that video took place. This would be my final before introducing the video diary series.

My first video diary basically just discussed what it was like being in quarantine for the first couple of days. It took some getting used to, but it was comforting knowing others were experiencing the same thing as me.,

My second video featured my thoughts on the renewed stay at home order and went on a little bit of a rant. I did showcase a text from my mom where it shows our discussion and what she thinks about being quarantined with the rest of my family.

The third video diary is me discussing how my “Easter” went. I did nothing except stay at my apartment so I wouldn’t even call it an Easter break. In this video I showed a text from my sister. Also in this video along with the other content I asked the question on whether or not this pandemic will affect other holidays along with it. Nobody still knows which is kind of scary to think about.

In my most recent video I basically just shared with everyone where I was when everything went down and when I knew this was a really big deal. I knew once the NBA shut down it was a huge deal. No billion dollar company just shuts down like that with no questions asked.

With all that being said here we are. The final video. It still seems surreal that we made it here with everything that came along the way. Saying it was an experience is quite the understatement. I had fun making these videos even though I look like I;m about to die in each one. I still need to practice on camera and get experience, but I was very pleased with the experience I did get through this class. I’d like to thank everyone and I really do hope everyone stays safe. I want the best for this class. have a safe, yet enjoyable summer. Thanks for watching.
